Bamboo Airways completed the deposit requirement in mid-June to reserve the 20 airplanes, which are tentatively schedule to deliver from April 2020 through 2021, Bloomberg revealed.

On June 25 Washington D.C. time, Bamboo Airways signed an agreement with Boeing on purchasing 20 787-9 Dreamliners, according to American press agencies such as Reuters, Bloomberg, New York Times, Yahoo News, CNBC. The signing was made at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce under the witness of Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue.

The deal, when finalized, would be worth US$5.6 billion at current list prices, according to Reuters.

“We are excited to introduce these new 787-9 Dreamliners into our fleet as we prepare to launch long-haul operations to international markets,” Yahoo quoted Mr Trinh Van Quyet, Chairman of FLC Group, 100% owner of Bamboo Airways.

“Our long-term vision is to connect Vietnam to key markets within Asia, Europe and North America and the capabilities of these new state-of-the-art Dreamliners will help us achieve our goals. The 787-9’s superior economics and efficiency, as well as the passenger pleasing interior of the Dreamliner will allow us to successfully grow our business while enabling us to better serve our customers. Bamboo Airways expects to be the first Vietnamese airlines to have the First Class.” Mr. Quyet said.

“We are delighted to welcome Bamboo Airways to the Boeing family and we look forward to Bamboo joining the growing group of global airlines that fly the 787 Dreamliner,” said Mr Dinesh Keskar, senior vice president of Asia Pacific and India Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We are confident that the 787 will help launch Bamboo’s long-haul operations and serve as the foundation of their success for many years to come.” he added.

FLC Group’s Chairman Trinh Van Quyet and Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific and India Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Dinesh Keskar signed the agreement.

According to Boeing, the 787 Dreamliner is an all-new, super-efficient family of commercial airplanes. Since 2011, more than 640 Dreamliners have entered service, flying over 226 million people on more than 680 unique routes around the world, saving an estimated 10 million tons of fuel.

The signing was made at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce under the witness of Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue.

At 6 meters longer than the 787-8, the 787-9 extends the family in capacity and range, flying more passengers and more cargo farther. The airplane can fly 290 passengers, in a typical two-class configuration, up to 14,140 km.

This commitment represents the first widebody airplane purchase by Bamboo Airways. According to Reuters, earlier in March 2018, FLC Group also reached an agreement worth US$3.108 billion on purchasing 24 A321NEO aircraft from France’s Airbus. The commitment was made under the presence of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President of the French National Assembly, François de Rugy.

On the same day, at Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C., FLC Group held a large-scaled seminar, aiming at calling investment into Vietnam’s potential fields as well as promoting the group’s products and services in real estate, aviation, golf tourism-travel and high-tech agriculture to the U.S. market. The event attracted more than 200 guests from diplomatic agencies, financial institutions, fund management companies, investment funds, businesses, potential investors and press agencies.
